Clearview News: Happy 84 birthday on February 28 to Kurrilue Johnson in Maryland, an adamant reader of the Hughes County Tribune. Sisters Marian and Jean Marie and her husband Frank spent time with their mother Marguerite and brothers Earl and Daryl French in Clearview last week. Rural Water District #3 continues to ask customers to boil their water before consumption or cooking. The citizens are happy to be over the cold weather and are anxious to get out prepare for spring. Please continue your prayers for those on the sick list Marguerite French, L. C. Carson, Marjorie Plunkett, Kevin Sinnett, Kurrilue Johnson, Billy Walker, Cornell Lucas, and Jean Chatman.
Read moreThe Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame, Inc. is offering a scholarship generously donated by Mr. and Mrs. William “Bill” Ford of Shawnee, Oklahoma. Mr. Ford played football under coach Watson at Shawnee High School. Coach Watson had major impact on the life and success of Mr. Ford and in return this scholarship has been established to continue the legacy of making a difference in the lives of young athletes as Coach Watson did for so many. This scholarship is open to male and female athletes who attend and graduate from an Oklahoma Public school that will attend college fulltime at an Oklahoma accredited institution. Preference will be given to African American students. The amount to be awarded will be contingent upon monies available each year and may vary. The selection process will be concluded by April 1 st of each year and the recipients will be notified in writing. Recipients will be asked to attend the Oklahoma African American Educators Hall of Fame banquet in September.

Our destination was Maxie Cemetery, about a mile off US- 270 a few miles this side of Wister, Oklahoma. We went there to place some new gravestones — the main one marking our grandfather George Washington Boyd’s grave. He was my mom’s dad and he died young in the great pandemic of 1918. May 17 of 1918 to be exact. There was the grave of my great Uncle there too and his was illegible too. So we replaced his too. His name was Mike Boyd. The old sandstones had faded away so bad you could not read the hand chiseled names and dates on them. Corky believed, as did I that families should see to things like this. Neglected graves can become “lost.”

She was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Joseph and Dovie Hartsell. Her last days were spent at home surrounded by her husband, Roy, her youngest daughter Angelia and grandchildren.
