Wetumka Public School’s student garden project is underway, thanks to a Horticultural Grant through OSU! Research shows that student participation in school garden projects promotes healthy eating habits through experiential learning. The focus of this project is to help students understand where their food comes from and how to make healthier food choices when at home. Wetumka Elementary has partnered with Wetumka High School to create fall and spring gardens with Mrs. Ashley Burton’s 6th grade science classes and Principal Reid’s 9th-12th grade Botany/Horticultural classes. Students constructed the raised garden beds from tires and planted radishes, carrots, spinach, lettuce, and collards for a fall harvest. Students and staff look forward to the yummy rewards of their labor!
