Tony Chesnutt

Tony is the son of George & Jewell (Fream) Chesnutt, born on June 28, 1947, in Holdenville, Oklahoma, where his dad owned the Pontiac dealership. Tony was brought up and attended schools in Holdenville, graduating Holdenville High School with the Class of 1965. He served for seven years in the Army National Guard. He was a marksman with a shotgun, skilled enough to be invited to the Olympics for skeet shooting, but unable to accept due to health issues. He attended Oklahoma State University and studied Architecture. He was married at a young age to Jane Stafford and was blessed with two daughters, Kristen and Kellie. When he later married Cecelia Evelyn ‘Cissy’ Clymer on June 8, 1991, in Oklahoma City, he was blessed with two more children, Joe and Melissa. He and Cissy bought a lake house, created a perfect environment for the enjoyment of their grandchildren, and played a vital role in helping to raise them. Tony worked more than twenty years for Berexco as an oil architect, designing and overseeing construction and placement of oil rigs across the country. He worked for the Oklahoma Historical Society as Project Manager for the remodeling of historical sites, retiring after twenty years. He enjoyed using his architectural skills for designing and drawing up plans for private homes of family and friends. He loved the Oklahoma City Sportsman’s Club and dove hunting. More than anything, he loved the company of his children and grandchildren. He was an uncommon man, and he will be deeply missed.

I remember one nice day in Oklahoma 75 years ago when I volunteering to drive my grandfather, Will W. Armstrong, down to Wister for a visit with his daughter. I was the only one handy that day and besides, being a teenager with a new driver’s license, I looked forward to the trip. I asked my grandpa a lot of questions that day. We were pretty close buddies anyway and many items he mentioned that day I still remember. Born in 1872 he knew a lot about early Oklahoma history. In fact, he lived a lot of it. Driving through Gowan on US-270 and down Gowan Mountain into the vast Gowen Prairie, I asked him if he remembered how this part of the state looked in his “day.”

It is Time to Go Fishing

A few days ago, Donnie Nero and Alpheus Grundy went on a fishing trip to Grassy Lake to check out the crappie. They were not the only ones there, as other individuals were also fishing from the banks of the lake, and three were fishing from paddle boats and canoes. Although the fish were not biting much, Grundy managed to catch three crappies of decent size, sufficient for a pan fry.
