Read moreThe historic Okmulgee Colored Hospital has undergone amazing progress in recent years. Previously, the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant Program in 2021 awarded “Landmark for all Generations, Inc.” to fund elements of a project aimed at increasing the marketing and visibility of this historic Okmulgee Black Hospital. Funding included monies for a logo and style guide creation, video production, and the development of a website to disseminate content that will help the public better understand this unique historic site. “Landmark for all Generations” is headed by Lemon Lewis of Okmulgee, Oklahoma who has made his life goal the restoration. Mr. Lewis is looking forward to sharing the story of Oklahoma’s first Black hospital and gaining support for its renovation.”
Read moreThe “Tulsa Remote” group has now completed their second leg of a fiveleg tour of the all-black towns of Oklahoma. The first leg consisted of Taft, Tullahassee, and Redbird. This second leg consisted of visiting the towns of Summit, Rentiesville, and Vernon. At Summit, the group met Mayor Greg Smith and visited the historic St. Thomas Primitive Baptist Church. In Rentiesville, the group met Mayor Mildred Burkhalter and Selby Miner at the Dusk ‘Til Dawn Blues Club and Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame and the Honey Springs Battlefield Visitors Center. In Vernon, the group was greeted by Supt. Pastor Herman and Corine Huffman of Huffman Pentecostal Temple who gave the history of Vernon and gave the group of tour of the town which included a visit to New Hope Missionary Baptist Church established in 1917 and thriving. Leg three towns will include Grayson, Clearview, IXL, and Boley.
