Fires Destroy Masonic Building, Homes in Weleetka

WELEETKA HAS BEEN RAVAGED BY FIRES IN RECENT DAYS. Two house fires, along with the Masonic Building on Main Street in the quiet rural community, were a total loss. First responders from surrounding counties all came and assisted with the blaze downtown. The Masonic building, as well as the homes, were a total loss. No one was injured in the fires. Old Time Cornbread

1 ¾ cups cornmeal 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ cup flour 2 cups buttermilk 1 tablespoon sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons vegetable oil ½ teaspoon soda Combine dry ingredients. Whisk together buttermilk and egg. Add to cornbread mixture, stirring just until combined. Place oil into a cast-iron skillet or 9-inch square baking pan and heat for 10 minutes. Pour batter into hot pans and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Makes 12 servings.
